How Saltire made me eat humble pie about technology

People often ask how I went from gender diversity consultancy to creating a games company. The two are not as far removed as you may think. As part of my time on the Saltire Fellowship, we focused on developing scalable businesses in growth sectors; and we routinely focused on technology companies. Oddly at first, I resented this asking ‘this has no resemblance to my business. I’m not a technophile!’ My history had been in consultancy; being hired as an advisor and speaker. It was a rewarding career, but one of the biggest challenges for any consultancy is to scale. Your assets are in your head; and your clients want you – not an associate. So how do you scale your knowledge? For me, the ans

Vote for WES!

Women's Enterprise Scotland (WES), the community interest company which is leading the drive to improve rates of women-led businesses, is calling for support to run two Business Creation Courses in the Blairgowrie and Rattray area. The project has been shortlisted for the 2017 RBS Skills and Opportunities Fund and WES is appealing for votes to get behind the proposal, which will see two business creation courses being delivered to budding female entrepreneurs in the Perthshire area. The courses will provide early-stage business creation support through face-to-face training and via a digital platform. One course will run during the day, with crèche facilities, whilst the other will run in th

Fearless Girl Stands Up For Gender Balance

She looks like a tiny dancer - defiantly standing with her arms resting on her hips, a steely look playing in her eyes. “ Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough”…that’s the vibe. It’s the bronze statue in New York’s financial district that’s causing a commotion. Fearless Girl is inspiring women to take control, to be more confident in the face of life’s challenges. The image has been plastered all over social media over the past week few weeks and although the girl’s appearance is provoking lots of positive comments ( “ women have balls too!”) , the

Inspiring young people into enterprise will reap rich rewards

Confucius said “If your plan is for 1 year, then plant rice. If your plan is for 10 years, then plant trees. If your plan is for 100 years, educate children”. Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity of speaking to a group of S3 business studies pupils at Notre Dame High School in Glasgow about my enterprise journey. WES Ambassadors recognise the importance of giving women entrepreneurs more visibility and one of the ways we can do this is by working with local schools. This allows us to inspire pupils to think about enterprise as a viable option for them. It is so important for young people to grasp as many opportunities as we can give them and to provide budding e
