Sheila Fleet, Sheila Fleet Jewellery
Few women have been in business as successfully or as long as Orkney’s Sheila Fleet. The jewellery designer-maker celebrated an OBE award and 20 years in business last year, received an Honorary Degree from Edinburgh Art College in June 2014 and has just launched her 76th jewellery collection.
Sheila has shops in Orkney, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Loch Lomond, online and stockists all over the UK, Europe and even further afield.
Sheila was brought up on a farm in Orkney, surrounded by expansive views, and encouraged by her mother to draw from an early age. She graduated from Edinburgh Art College in the mid-1960s, worked for 26 years in the jewellery industry and set up her own company, Sheila Fleet Jewellery in 1993. The business soon outgrew her kitchen table moving first to a converted garden shed then into a purpose built workshop. In 1998 she won the Highland Trade Fair Business of the Year Award.
Today, all Sheila Fleet Jewellery is made in a state-of-the art workshop in Orkney and the business remains family-run. Son Martin and his wife Mairi head Sheila’s specialist team of experienced craftsmen and jewellery consultants. When the light is special Sheila still returns to the coastline for inspiration, drawing on nature’s vast spectrum of moods and colours for her new designs. Her silver, gold, platinum and palladium jewellery set with precious stones, diamonds and vibrant enamel colours is now collected and worn all over the world.
Her advice for life? “You need to find something you like doing, take advantage of opportunities as they unfold, and do your best in whatever you do,” says Sheila.
